Masque de grande dimension, utilisé à des fins protectrices, il intervenait à l'origine au cours des rites initiatiques et des funérailles des initiés des sociétés secrètes masculines. Il protégeait en outre les jeunes circoncis des influences maléfiques. Ce masque apparaît en mimant les comportements des animaux évoqués. Masque composite puissant, associant le serpent, la gazelle, le caméléon et le crocodile, il était destiné à s'attirer les faveurs des esprits de la forêt, porté en oblique sur la tête.

The Banda Mask was made by either a Nalu, Landuma or Baga artist in Guinea. Banda is the name of a masked supernatural being found among the Nalu and other local people along the coastal regions of Guinea. Banda (also called Kumbaruba by some Baga groups), is a complex composite of human and animal forms. The long horizontal headdress is composed of the face of a human being and the jaw of a crocodile, whose angular teeth are visible along the side of the mask
